Long Island Pro Wins Freedom Tour Inaugural Event
Tough conditions did little to dampen player spirits at Long Island National
(April 4, 2006: New York) Many of the finest professional and amateur golfers from the New York metro area descended on Long Island National Golf Course this Monday morning to take part in the first event of the Freedom Tour. Mike Gilmore, Head Professional at Piping Rock Club, Long Island, overcame tough competition and weather conditions to win the inaugural event.
A short frost delay, cold temperatures, strong wind gusts and scattered showers certainly had an impact on play but the course at Long Island National was in good condition. It offered players a mix of links and traditional course design along with dramatic rolling hills, more than 55 strategically placed sand bunkers and three large lakes. All in all it was an exciting first day event for the tour and its players.
"There was a lot of excitement among the players today. Even though it was cold and windy we were all looking forward to starting the first event. The Freedom Tour team and all at Long Island National took great care of us. I was up against a tough field of players so I am thrilled to have won and look forward to the next event on Monday at Hudson Hills." Mike Gilmore, Head Professional, Piping Rock Club, Long Island
